JULIEN-K LIVE


: INTRO :

Ever since COVID let up, we have been going to concerts more frequently. Most of the shows we have been to have been stadium/arena shows.

Of course, this is due to these being pretty big bands (Rammstein, Deftones, Ghost, etc.).

A few of the bands we missed then (since they were not touring at the time) are much smaller.

I'm talking about club-sized crowds.

One band we have been following since they first started (literally) is Julien-K.


: DEATH TO ANALOGUE :

For the uninitiated, Julien-K started as out in Orgy. Apparently, due to creative differences everyone except the lead singer left.

I remember being very impressed with that first Orgy album. It had some bangers like Blue Monday, Stiches, and many others. Even the disc cover and insert were awesome. They had an awesome sci-fi future aesthetic.

Julien-K is very different to Orgy. The best way I can explain it, is Orgy sounds more industrial, but older industrial (if that makes sense).


: CALIFORNIA NOIR :

Curiously enough, we started following Julien-K much closer since COVID. They do a few live streams here and there. Usually taking questions from fans. Giving updates on the current state of the band, things like that.

They usually tour on the west coast (they're from LA).

Once we found out they were finally coming to our city (one hour away actually) we bought tickets so fast we might have forgotten to blink.

Hell we were so excited for the show, that once we realized it was at a venue we had never heard of, we ended up buying tickets for another show a few weeks before the Julien-K show. We did this just so we could scope out the best seats in the house.


: SOCIAL CLUB :

In their current set-up, Julien-K is rocking a 3-man piece.

For this set they played a sprinkle of greatest hits with a major focus on their recent album DRK|MODE.

They funny thing about this show was that since we got there early, we hit the vendors first to buy some Julien-K merch.

Turns out the person manning the table was Amir Derakh (Julien-Ks guitar player).

I had been seeing this dude on MTV since 2000, on YouTube since at least 2010, when I saw him standing there I was a bit star struck.

I geeked out and told him we have been fans of his music, and we have been following the band for years.

Dude basically just said: "that's awesome, thanks for coming out".

To his defense, I'm sure dude was probably sleep deprived and tired from driving around the country.

No hard feelings.

Dude even made it up to me by pointing towards me during Shadow Life.
